History of the Fire Prevention Patch
The fire prevention patch is the official Maryland State Fire Prevention Patch. It is
worn only by members of the association who belong to a Fire Prevention Committee, including ladies auxiliary committees.
In March 1969, Thomas Mattingly, Chairman of the Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department Fire Prevention Committee, conceived the idea of the patch as a means of distinguishing members of fire prevention committees. He then began designing several different patches and chose what he felt was the best one. On April 14, 1969, he presented a drawing of the patch to his department and asked that they adopt it as their official fire prevention patch. At that meeting, it was unanimously accepted. The patch was then forwarded to the Maryland State Firemen’s Association for consideration by the MSFA Fire Prevention Committee. On May 20, 1969, Mr. Mattingly was notified that the patch had been adopted as the official State Fire Prevention Patch.
This patch is now proudly worn by many fire prevention educators throughout the great state of Maryland. The Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department is proud of the fact that they were instrumental in the development of this means of distinguishing those who dedicate much of their time to promote public fire safety and education.
